How does art psychotherapy work, compared to art as therapy?

Updated by SGH-AHPEDIA

Psychotherapy is an individualised, collaborative process between a trained therapist and an individual seeking support. Within a safe and non-judgemental environment, art psychotherapy aims to address various mental health concerns by building self-awareness and strengthening the self. The process involves using art to explore your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. Ultimately, art psychotherapy aims to empower individuals with insight and effective coping strategies to navigate life's complexities and promote overall well-being.

Art as therapy (or therapeutic art) focuses on self-care, stress relief, and enjoyment or relaxation, without necessarily involving discussions of insight or individualised goals. At SGH, we offer art psychotherapy for individual sessions. However, our art therapists may conduct non-clinical sessions such as support groups or events for staff and public (subject to availability), which involve therapeutic art experiences.
