How can I tell if my preterm baby is ready for interaction versus needing rest?
Look for these readiness signals: Ready to interact: Eyes open and looking around, smiling, calm facial expression, cooing sounds. Not ready/needs rest: Eyes looking away, grimacing or frowning, crying, yawning. If ready, engage with enthusiasm, imitate their expressions, and talk about what you're both doing or feeling. If not ready, check basic needs (milk, nappy change), provide comfort with cuddles or massage, speak soothingly, and reduce stimulation. Feel free to approach your paediatric feeding and communication speech therapists to find out more!
