Why can’t I report a spoofed number?

Updated by SCAMSHIELD

When the ScamShield app indicates that a number is 'invalid' or 'might be spoofed', it usually means the scammer used a number format that doesn't follow standard phone number rules, or they may have manipulated the caller ID to show a fake number.

How call checking works on the ScamShield app:

For iOS and Android:

  • The ScamShield app validates phone numbers against standard phone number formats to ensure they are real, possible phone numbers

  • Some scammers use impossible number combinations that can't exist in the real telephone network (like wrong country codes or incorrect number lengths)

  • If the ScamShield app allowed the reporting of invalid numbers, it could lead to a database filled with impossible numbers that would never be used for real calls, making the blocklist less effective

Even though you can't proceed with reporting this specific number, you can still report your scam experience by:

  1. Taking a screenshot of any messages received (if there were any)

  2. Using the 'Check' feature to verify any suspicious links or messages shared by the scammer

  3. Making a police report if you've experienced monetary losses
