The programme consists of pre- and post-course lessons taught by our teachers and the OBS Course led by OBS Instructors. It is designed to ensure achievement of the programme’s learning outcomes and transference of learning to other areas of the students’ life. Students are not graded for performance but are encouraged to work on goals they set for themselves.
Please refer your child to the packing list. Both the school and OBS discourage students from bringing expensive items. We encourage your child to borrow items that he/she does not have from family/friends/schoolmates to minimise unnecessary expenses. Your child’s valuables, such as mobile phones and wallets, will be kept by OBS to ensure the security of personal items and minimal distraction during the Programme.
Any personal device to be used as a PLD will have to be assessed by the school. If the devices meet the minimum requirements, a Device Management Application (DMA) must be installed in order for your child/ward to use these devices in school. As such, it is highly recommended to purchase a PLD via the school as we advocate for students to keep schoolwork on the PLD and usage of their personal devices separate.
The information of each HBL session can be found on the HBL microsite shared with the students. Alternatively, you may find the schedule on our school’s website.
HBL comprises synchronous lessons through platforms such as Zoom, as well as asynchronous lessons via online portals such as Student Learning Space (SLS). There will also be readings and assignments.
Students should start each HBL session with a check-in with their Class Mentors at 8:00am. Thereafter, they should follow the HBL schedule and complete the necessary tasks. However, students are to be mindful of the amount of screen time when using their personal learning devices.
Teachers are contactable through email and any other means of communication that they have established with their students.
On HBL days, there will be no activities in school that students need to attend. Parents will be notified should there be exceptions.
For Secondary 1 to 3 students, there will be 3 Weighted Assessments a year, one in each of Terms 1, 2 and 3. Secondary 4 and 5 students will have 2 Weighted Assessments in Terms 1 and 2.
Just like timetabled lessons, Weighted Assessment are part of the learning process. Structuring them during curriculum time is the most natural and conducive way for students to learn, and it also reduces assessment anxiety.
For students who are unwell, a medical certificate must be produced. For students who are away for official reasons such as competitions, they will be allowed to reschedule their assessment within 3 school days before or after the paper. For all other cases, the school will consider them on a case-by-case basis.
OBS uses the outdoors as its classroom. Your child will be engaged in a variety of activities that will help him/her not just to discover, but also challenge his/her personal limits. Some of these activities include problem-solving activities, adventure activities conducted over land and in the sea. It allows students to connect with nature and develop their resilience while cultivating a positive mindset to manage difficult situations they face.
The MOE-OBS Challenge Programme is part of school curriculum for Secondary 3 students but parental consent will be sought.
The positive learning experiences and well-being of your child are our priority. Activities are purposefully designed to meet the programme outcomes. The students are supervised by qualified OBS Instructors who are trained in wilderness first aid, and have undergone rigorous training, technical skills assessments and certifications. Students undergo the course in groups of up to 12-14 per Instructor, and this small group size facilitates good interaction, adequate peer support and opportunities to practise leadership roles. In addition, OBS has a robust safety monitoring system and evacuation plan for emergencies.
