Zakat fitrah must be paid in the country where we reside during the period when zakat fitrah is compulsory, that is just before end of Ramadan and before the Eid prayer. Thus, if one is in Singapore during that time, one is obliged to pay zakat fitrah in Singapore. If one is in another country, one can pay zakat fitrah at that country. But to pay zakat fitrah in another country when one is residing in different country, it is not allowed.
You can fulfil your Zakat through one of the following ways listed below:
1. Authorised Collection Centres / Mosque
2. ePayment website
3. AXS stations
4. Cheque to Muis
5. Giro to Muis
6. DBS/POSB iBanking, mBanking
7. CIMB Clicks
Calculation which takes the lowest amount in each account and then multiplying 2.5% of it is not accurate because there is a possibility that the lowest amount in each account would fall below the nisab value (and thus not liable for Zakat) but in actuality when summed up would exceed the nisab value (and thus liable for Zakat).
If the jewellery is intended for use, Zakat is not due on it as the weight is below the uruf of 860 grams. If the jewellery is not intended for use, it is obligatory to pay Zakat on it once it reaches the haul, as the weight has reached the nisab of 86 grams.
For your information, Zakat Fitrah may be paid in Ramadan up to the start of Eid prayers. Payment after the abovesaid prayers is only considered as sadaqah. Considering you have missed the payment and it is not done on purpose, seek forgiveness from Allah SWT for the mistake and and take measures to rectify the situation so that it may not happen again for coming Ramadan. May your mistakes be forgiven by Allah SWT.
The conditions to be eligible for fulfilment of Zakat are:
- Muslim.
- Full ownership of the wealth.
- Nisab is reached: Nisab is the market value of 86 grams of gold.
- Haul is reached: Possession of the assets for one Hijrah year or 355 days.
Zakat is obligatory (wajib, one of the pillars of Islam), has specific rate of 2.5% and minimum level (Nisab), specific period of fulfilment (Haul) and specific beneficiary (Asnaf).
Sadaqah is encouraged (sunnah), has neither specific rate nor minimum level, specific period of fulfilment nor specific beneficiary.
To make changes to your Zakat by Giro monthly deduction, please fill up the Authorisation to Change Zakat by Giro Contribution Form and submit to us by mail at the following address: Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura, 273 Braddell Road, Singapore 579702. To cancel Giro deduction for Muzakki (Zakat payer) who has passed away, the Waris (Beneficiary) can fill up the Zakat by Giro Termination Form and submit it (include a copy of death certificate) to us by mail. Alternatively the Giro can be terminated directly with the Muzakki's Bank.
If one opts for Auto-Inclusion, Zakat contributed by individuals will be automatically sent to IRAS for tax deduction. For non-individuals, please declare your Zakat contribution through submission of Income Tax Return to IRAS.
No receipt will be issued monthly, instead we will send a statement of account at year end.
For over-contribution, there are two options.
Option 1: To state the intention (niat) that excess amount will be carried forward for the prepayment of Zakat for the next year.
Option 2: To state the intention (niat) that excess amount will be treated as a voluntary donation or sadaqah. If however you need to request for refund, you can fill in the Application for Refund of Zakat by Giro Form and submit to us by mail.
You can pay the under-contribution Zakat difference ($600) at haul end as a lump sum through various methods such as cash, cheque, Nets, AXS, eNets and online.
1. First, you need to determine or estimate the Zakat that is due for the following year. For example, you will have about $96,000 of wealth. Based on 2.5% of Zakat rate, your Zakat contribution will be $2,400 (2.5% x $96,000).
2. For monthly Giro contribution, you will need to divide the $2,400 over a 12-month period. Hence, your average contribution is $200 per month.
3. Fill up the Giro form for $200 monthly deduction on your bank account. In 12 months, you will have paid $2,400. Once completed, you may submit the form to us by mail at the following address:
Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura, 273 Braddell Road, Singapore 579702
4. The whole process from application to the first bank deduction should be between 1 to 2 months, depending on the duration of bank approval. Incomplete submission or bank rejection may delay the process. The 1st Giro deduction will be on the 16th of the month. For failed deduction, the 2nd deduction will be on the 5th of the following month. Should the dates fall on weekend or public holiday, the deductions will be on the next working day. Notification will be given upon submission application to the bank and 1st successful deduction to highlight the beginning of your haul (period).
You only need to state your Zakat intent (niat) once when you fill in the Giro form (refer to Zakat intent in the Zakat by Giro Form ). Should you make changes to your monthly deduction, you will need to make your Zakat intent on the form. Also, the minimum Giro deduction is $5 per month.
1. It is cashless and convenient.
2. You can better manage and plan for your long-term assets.
