What is an Emergency Order?

Updated by MSF

The Emergency Order (EOR) will serve as a temporary safeguard measure until a Personal Protection Order or Expedited Order, which restrains a person from committing violence against a family member, is issued in court.

The Ministry of Social and Family Development's  Domestic Violence Emergency Response Team (DVERT) officers will be able to issue, or direct authorised person to issue the EOR at the scene in high-risk situations to restrain persons causing harm from further violence.

This EOR can include the following orders:

1. Domestic Exclusion Order, which restricts the person causing harm from being at home to ensure the victim’s safety.

2. Stay Away Order, which prohibits the person causing harm from entering or remaining in places the victim frequents, such as the workplace or a childcare centre.

3. No Contact Order, which prohibits the  person causing harm from visiting or communicating with the victim.

4. The Emergency Order and the accompanying orders has an effect for 14 days, and the person causing harm can be arrested if he commits another act of violence that breaches the EOR.
