Will my case be assigned to lawyers outside of the Legal Aid Bureau?
The Legal Officers of the Bureau handle almost all the cases of the Bureau. Cases are assigned from time to time to private solicitors on the Bureau's panel of solicitors. In such event, you will be informed by the Bureau.When is grant of aid given?
If the Legal Aid Board is of the view that your case has merits, i.e. you have a reasonable case to bring or defend in court, then it will decide to grant you legal aid.However, if the Board is of the view that your case does not have merits, i.e. you do not have a reasonable case to bring or defend in court, then it will decide not to grant you legal aid. LAB will send you a letter letting you know whether you have been granted legal aid. If you have not been granted legal aid, then the letter will briefly explain the reasons for this. All decisions of the Legal Aid Board in respect of applications for legal aid are final.When an application for legal aid is approved and a Grant of Aid is filed, the applicant is entitled to enjoy all the facilities and privileges provided under the Legal Aid and Advice Act.How do I become a deputy for a mentally incapacitated person?

Will I be paid or have to pay costs if I win or lose my legally aided case?
If you win the case, the Court may order costs to be paid by the opposing party to the Director of Legal Aid.
Legally aided persons will usually not be ordered by the Court to pay costs if you lose the case. However, there may be situations in which the Court may order you to pay costs. For example, if the Court decides that you have obtained legal aid through fraud or misrepresentation or that you have acted improperly in the conduct of your Court proceedings, it may order you to pay costs to the opposing party.What time is my appointment with the Legal Aid Bureau?

Legal aid is available to Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents who are resident and present in Singapore, as well as citizens or residents of contracting states who are involved in applications under The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction.
If you are below the age of 21, your guardian (e.g. your parent) must apply on your behalf.

This depends on the complexity of your case and the amount of time needed to assess your case. Generally, your legal officer has to review your statement, research the legal position and draft an opinion for submission to the Board. No. After your legal aid application, you will need to pass the Means Test and then have your statement taken. After your statement is taken, LAB will need to investigate your case and assess if legal aid should be granted to you. LAB will assess if you have reasonable grounds for bringing or defending a case in Court (“the Merits Test”), after we get a thorough understanding of your case.
You will be informed on whether you have been granted legal aid once the decision has been made.
Do I take the Means Test online or in person?
Legal Advice CaseIf you register for a legal advice case online, you are required to do the Means Test online. If you attend at the Bureau to register for a legal advice case, you are required to do the Means Test at the Bureau’s registration counter.Legal Aid/Assistance CaseIf you register for a legal aid or legal assistance case online, you are required to attend at the Bureau within the next 2 working days to do a preliminary Means Test at the registration counter. After you have passed the preliminary Means Test, you will be given a Means Test appointment for your means to be formally assessed.If you attend at the Bureau to register for a legal aid or legal assistance case, you are required to do a preliminary Means Test at the registration counter. What languages can Legal Aid Bureau officers speak?
Legal Aid Bureau officers are able to conduct interviews and provide legal advice in languages such as English, Mandarin, Teochew, Hokkien, Cantonese, Tamil and Malay.How do I get a divorce?

How do I withdraw my application for legal aid?
You can come to the Bureau to sign a withdrawal form.
Alternatively, you can write to us with your reasons for withdrawal. Please include your name, NRIC No. and case reference number so that we can trace your case file.
Please note that you may still have to pay contribution assessed for your case.
