Updated by MHA Under the Penal Code, offences committed against minors below 14 years of age or against victims in close or intimate relationship with the offender may be subject to enhanced penalties. For instance, hurt caused to a spouse is liable to be punished with up to six years’ imprisonment, instead of up to three years’ imprisonment, under section 323 read with section 74C of the Penal Code.
In 2025, MHA amended the Penal Code to increase the maximum penalties for fatal abuse of vulnerable victims, including children below 14 years of age, to life imprisonment or up to 30 years’ imprisonment.
Apart from the Penal Code, the Children and Young Persons Act also provide for offences relating to the ill-treatment of children and young persons.
