What do I do if I suspect that my device has been hacked?
Please note that the ScamShield app is designed specifically to protect users from scam calls and SMS messages. It does not detect or block malware or spyware on your personal devices.
How can you tell if your device has been hacked?
If you notice the following, your device may have been compromised:
Performance and Battery Issues: Your phone suddenly becomes very slow, apps crash frequently, or the battery drains unusually quickly.
Unusual Activity: You notice unfamiliar apps you didn't download, unexpected pop-ups, or your phone makes calls/sends messages without your action. Your phone feels hot even when you're not using it intensively.
Account Security: You see login attempts from unknown locations, password reset emails you didn't request, or your contacts receive messages you didn't send. Check your email's "sent" folder for messages you didn't write.
Data Usage: Your phone shows unusually high data usage even when you're not actively using it. You can check this in your phone's settings under data usage.
If you suspect that someone may be trying to gain access to your accounts, we strongly recommend that you:
Do not click any links or enter any OTP codes that you didn't request
Immediately change passwords for important accounts
Enable two-factor authentication for all your accounts if you haven't already
Check if any of your accounts have been compromised:
Look for unfamiliar login attempts
Check for any changes to your recovery email/phone
Review any linked devices
Uninstall suspicious or unknown apps from your device(s).
Monitor your bank and credit card statements for any unauthorised transactions and notify your bank if anything looks unusual.
Clear your browser cache and cookies, especially if you accessed sensitive sites or if your transaction was done online.
Back up important data and perform a factory reset if you believe your device is seriously compromised.
You can also report any suspicious phone number(s) or message(s) using the ScamShield app, but more importantly, please: File a police report immediately if you’ve lost money.
If you've installed a malicious app from an unofficial source, please refer to this guide on what to do.
If you're unsure, please contact the ScamShield Helpline at 1799 for advice.
