What is the Islamic basis which allows the use of credit card for Zakat?
When a Muslim uses a credit card to fulfil his Zakat obligation, the credit card issuer will advance the payment of Zakat to the receiving organisation. In this transaction, there is an element of delegation (wakalah), where a third-party (credit card issuer) makes the payment on behalf of the Zakat payer (muzakki), and Syariah allows for delegation in completing Zakat.*
The responsibility of the muzakki is to pay back the amount that has been advanced immediately. As long as the muzakki does not delay the payment beyond the statement due date, then no late penalties, interest charges or debt is incurred in the payment of Zakat using credit card.
