Is a company required to provide Government-Paid Maternity Leave (GPML) to a new employee who already received GPML benefits from a previous employer before being retrenched?
Yes, the employee may be entitled to GPML from her new employer if she meets the following criteria:
The child is a Singapore Citizen at birth, or becomes one within 12 months of the date of birth (inclusive).
She has served her new employer continuously for at least 3 months before the child's date of birth.
Additional notes:
For citizenship by registration, GPML can only be taken from the citizenship date onwards and within 12 months of the child's date of birth (both dates inclusive).
If the employee meets all GPML criteria except the 3-month continuous employment requirement, and the employer is willing to grant GPML, the Government may reimburse the employer the Government-paid portion of her GPML.
