What are the eligibility criteria for Government-Paid Maternity Leave (GPML)?

Updated by MSF

Eligible working mothers in Singapore can receive up to 16 weeks of Government-Paid Maternity Leave (GPML) if they meet the following criteria.

For live births:

  • The child must be a Singapore Citizen at birth, or become one within 12 months of the date of birth (inclusive).

  • Employed mothers must have served their employer continuously for at least 3 months before the child's date of birth.

  • Self-employed mothers must have been engaged in a trade, business, profession, or vocation continuously for at least 3 months before the birth, and must have lost income from ceasing active engagement during the GPML period.

For stillbirths:

  • Either the mother must be a Singapore Citizen at the time of the stillbirth, or the child's father must be a Singapore Citizen who was lawfully married to the mother at some point between conception and the stillbirth (regardless of whether the marriage remains subsisting at the time of the stillbirth).

  • Employed mothers must have served their employer continuously for at least 3 months before the date of stillbirth.

  • Self-employed mothers must have been engaged in a trade, business, profession, or vocation continuously for at least 3 months before the date of stillbirth, and must have lost income from ceasing active engagement during the GPML period.

  • A Notification of Stillbirth certified by a medical practitioner or registered midwife, or a stillbirth certificate issued by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA), must be provided.

In all cases:

  • The mother must have been serving her current employer at the time of the child's birth.

  • The mother must not have previously claimed Government-Paid Maternity Benefit (GPMB) for the same child order.

Additional notes:

  • For citizenship by registration, GPML can only be taken from the citizenship date onwards and within 12 months of the child's date of birth (both dates inclusive).

  • If a mother meets all GPML criteria except the 3-month continuous employment requirement, and her employer is willing to grant GPML, the Government may reimburse the employer the Government-paid portion of her GPML.
