Updated by MSF

Eligible working mothers can enjoy up to 16 weeks of leave if they meet the following criteria:

For live births:

  1. Child is a Singapore Citizen at birth or becomes a Singapore Citizen within 12 months from the child's date of birth (inclusive of date of birth)¹.

  2. For employee²: She must have served the employer for a continuous period of at least 3 months before the child's date of birth.

  3. For self-employed: She must have been engaged in a particular trade, business, profession or vocation for a continuous period of at least 3 months immediately before the child's date of birth, and have lost income from ceasing to be actively engaged during the Government-Paid Maternity Leave (GPML) period.

For stillbirths:

  1. She (Mother) is a Singapore Citizen at the time of the stillbirth.

    • If not, her child's father is a Singapore Citizen at the time of the stillbirth and was lawfully married to her at some point between conception and stillbirth (whether or not such marriage remains subsisting at the time of the stillbirth).

  2. For employee²: She must have served the employer for a continuous period of at least 3 months before the date of stillbirth.

  3. For self-employed: She must have been engaged in a particular trade, business, profession or vocation for a continuous period of at least 3 months before the date of stillbirth, and have lost income from ceasing to be actively engaged during the GPML period.

  4. There is a Notification of a Stillbirth certified by a medical practitioner or a registered midwife or a stillbirth certificate issued by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority.

¹ GPML can only be taken from the citizenship date onwards (for citizenship by registration) and within 12 months from the child's date of birth (both dates inclusive).

² If she fulfils all GPML criteria except being employed for a continuous period of at least 3 months before the child's date of birth, and the employer is willing to grant GPML to her, the Government may reimburse the employer the Government-paid portion of her GPML.

  • Child is born on or after 1 Nov 2021.

  • She must have served the current employer at the point of her child's date of birth.

  • She has not claimed for GPMB in respect of the same child order.
