What are the eligibility criteria for students to take subjects at a More Demanding Level (MDL)?

Updated by YCSS

Eligibility for MDL subjects (English Language, Mathematics, Science, Mother Tongue Languages and Humanities) is based on students’ school-based results and subject teachers’ recommendations.

For Secondary 1 students (EL, MA, SC, MT), eligibility is reviewed after WA2 and EOY:

G2 → G3: At least 75% in the specific subject and subject teachers’ recommendation

G1 → G2: Based on school-based criteria and subject teachers’ recommendation

For Secondary 1 Humanities, eligibility is reviewed after EOY:

G2 → G3: At least 75% in the specific subject (Geography, History or Literature)

G1 → G2: At least 75% in G1 English Language (or 50% in G2 English Language) and a DI grade for Humanities and Social Studies Performance Tasks in Semesters 1 and 2

For Secondary 2 to Secondary 3 students:

Existing MDL students: Must meet promotion criteria and pass the MDL subject

Non-MDL students: At least 75% (G2) or 85% (G1) in the specific subject and subject teachers’ recommendation

Final decisions are made holistically, based on students’ readiness and teachers’ professional judgement.
