My supervisee recently shared about their thoughts of suicide, what should I do?

Updated by SPSVCO

When a supervisee shares about their thoughts of suicide, you may be startled or react emotionally. Remember to ask the golden question (i.e. Are you thinking of killing yourself?) and identify if there is a crisis.

If you are on a call with the supervisee, try to remain non-judgmental and patient while showing genuine concern. Where possible, inform the LCM ASAP that the supervisee experiences suicidal thoughts so that we can work together with you through the situation. If the supervisee is in immediate danger or require urgent assistance, please contact emergency services at 995 or 999.

Meanwhile, attempt to de-escalate the situation by recognising their struggle or what they’ve just said, and inviting them to keep talking. While listening, check on how they’ve coped and explore what resources they have tried so far. Let them know that it’s absolutely alright to seek out other additional help they may require. Create a safety plan together with them.

Possible 24/7 helplines to include in the safety plan incldues

National Mindline: 1771

or

Samaritans of Singapore (SOS): 1767
