What causes language delay?
There is no known cause of language delay. However, language delay has been associated with frequent ear infections, prematurity, low birth weight, family history of learning difficulties, and being male. Language delay may also be an early or secondary sign of other disorders (e.g. autism, developmental language disorder). Learning more than one language does not contribute to language delay. Similarly, having a language delay will not prevent your child from learning more than one language.
