Does my child have a language delay? What are the signs of a language delay?

Updated by SGH-AHPEDIA

Children with language delays have difficulties learning language and develop language at a slower rate than expected. A child with language delay can have difficulties understanding what you say and/or difficulties expressing himself (verbal or non-verbal).

Here are some signs of language delay:

  • Poor eye contact

  • Not using gestures (e.g. pointing, reaching) to communicate

  • Not copying words

  • Difficulty following directions

  • Not babbling by 10-12 months

  • No first real word by the age of 1 year

  • Not combining 2 words by the age of 2 years

  • Not speaking in short sentences (3-4 words) by the age of 3 years
