Do I need an MRI or X-ray before I start physiotherapy?

Most people don’t need imaging before starting physiotherapy. Many conditions—like back pain, neck pain, shoulder issues or knee pain—can be safely assessed and treated based on your symptoms, movement and physical examination. Scans are usually only recommended if there are red flags such as severe trauma, significant weakness, numbness, or symptoms that are not improving despite conservative treatment. Your physiotherapist can guide you on whether imaging is necessary and if it will change the course of treatment
