Do I need a neuropsychological assessment if I have already done brain imaging?

Updated by SGH-AHPEDIA

Brain imaging and neuropsychological assessments provide different, but complementary information. Brain scans (e.g., CT, MRI) show us the physical structure of your brain (e.g., strokes, tumours, shrinkage) but cannot tell us how well your brain is functioning.

Neuropsychological assessments measure your brain’s performance, such as how well you remember, pay attention, and solve problems. It helps to determine whether any changes seen on imaging are affecting your cognitive function. Together, imaging and neuropsychological assessments provide a more complete picture of both brain structure and function to assist with treatment planning.

Your doctor will determine whether brain imaging, neuropsychological assessment, or both, are needed based on your specific concerns.
