What should I do if my baby gags on solid foods?
Occasional gagging is normal and expected when babies start solids - it's how they learn to manage food in their mouth and move it safely for swallowing. The gag reflex naturally weakens as they practice. Occasional gagging with fingers and teething toys in the mouth is encouraged as it helps decrease gag sensitivity. Stay calm, let baby work through it, and don't intervene unless they're truly choking (silent, blue, unable to breathe). If there are ongoing concerns about gagging during mealtimes, please approach your paediatric feeding speech therapist for help.
