Non-surgical options can help manage symptoms, alleviate pain, and slow the progression of the condition. It is important to note that non-surgical options mostly focus on symptomatic treatment and not correct the deformity. Here are some evidence-based non-surgical options to manage symptoms, reduce pain and slow down the progression of bunions:

1. Footwear:

Footwear with a wide toe box can help reduce pressure on the bunion and prevent irritation. Avoid shoes with narrow or pointed toes, or wearing high heels

2. Bunion pads and cushions

Soft, gel-like pads can be placed over the bunion to reduce friction and provide cushioning, which may ease pain during activity

3. Orthotics & in-shoe paddings

Orthotics and in-shoe paddings may help to distribute pressure away from the bunion, improving comfort and potentially slowing progression.

4. Activity modification

Reducing activities that exacerbate bunion pain, such as running or standing for long periods, may help manage symptoms.

5. Exercises

Strengthening the muscles around the foot and ankle can improve foot stability and reduce pressure on the bunion. Exercises targeting the intrinsic foot muscles and the calf muscles can be helpful.

6. Pain management

Icing the area for 10-15 minutes several times a day and taking over the counter pain medications like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), can help reduce pain and inflammation associated with bunions.

While non-surgical treatments cannot completely correct a bunion, they may alleviate pain and improve quality of life. It is important to note that the effectiveness of these treatments varies from person to person, and the condition may still progress over time.

Do consult a podiatrist to tailor a treatment plan based on your specific needs and symptoms.
