Can bunion splints/ toe separators/ night splints be used to straighten bunions?

Unfortunately, bunion splints, toe separators, and night splints will not permanently straighten bunions. A bunion is a structural deformity involving bone and joint changes, and so far, there is no strong evidence supporting the use of these devices to reverse or correct the deformity.

While some individuals experience temporary relief from these devices, they might also cause discomfort. This is often due to mechanical pressure applied to realign the toe, which may strain joints or soft tissues. Prolonged use may lead to skin irritation, blisters, or circulatory issues, particularly with poor fit. In more rigid or advanced bunions, forced correction may exacerbate joint pain or inflammation. Hence, it is important to monitor how your foot responds and discontinue use if symptoms worsen.

However, wearing footwear with a forefoot rocker sole and a wide, deep toe box may help slow the progression of the bunion. Avoiding high heels and shoes with a narrow toe box can also help reduce pressure on the joint and delay worsening.

Do consult a podiatrist for footwear recommendations.
