Fasting requirements depend on the type of ultrasound you're having:

Abdominal ultrasound (liver, gallbladder, pancreas):

  • Yes, fast for 6-8 hours before your appointment

  • No food, drinks (except small sips of water), chewing gum, or sweets

  • This ensures clear images of your organs

Pelvic ultrasound:

  • Usually, no fasting required

  • You may need a full bladder instead - drink water 1 hour before

Other ultrasounds (heart, thyroid, breast, limbs):

  • No fasting needed

  • Eat and drink normally

Special considerations:

  • If you're diabetic, discuss timing of medications with your doctor

  • Take essential medications with small sips of water if needed

Important: You'll receive specific instructions when your appointment is booked. Follow these carefully as they're tailored to your particular scan.
