Are there fasting requirements for CT scans?
Fasting requirements depend on the type of CT scan you're having:
CT scans that typically require fasting (4-6 hours):
Abdominal CT scans
Pelvic CT scans
Any CT scan with oral contrast
CT scans with IV contrast (to reduce nausea risk)
CT scans that usually don't require fasting:
Head/brain CT
Chest CT
Limb or joint CT scans
Emergency CT scans
During fasting period:
No food or drinks except small sips of water for medications
No chewing gum, sweets, or smoking
Special considerations:
If you're diabetic, discuss medication timing with your doctor
Continue essential medications with small amounts of water
If you're having contrast, fasting helps prevent nausea
Important: You'll receive specific instructions when your scan is booked. Follow these carefully as they're tailored to your particular examination.
