Do I need medical certification to use or continue using my mobility scooter?

Under the Assessment for Mobility Scooter (AMS), only motorised scooter requires a medical certification. You do not need to be certified for using a manual or motorised wheelchair.

If you received your mobility scooter through Seniors' Mobility and Enabling Fund (SMF) or Assistive Technology Fund (ATF) before the commencement of AMS, you are automatically certified. No additional steps are required and you can continue using your existing mobility device as usual.

From the last quarter of 2025 onwards, Assessment for Mobility Scooter (AMS) will be required for:

- First-time mobility scooter applicants for SMF/ATF funding

- Anyone purchasing a mobility scooter privately from authorised vendors

- Replacement of an existing mobility scooter or purchasing a new one

What should I do?

If you are seeing a regular Occupational Therapist, you may approach him/her for assistance. Otherwise, please seek further advice from a doctor.

Still have more questions? More information will be released when AMS is officially launched.
