How is a Muslim marriage conducted?

Updated by OURMARRIAGEJOURNEY

A Muslim marriage entails the following:

  • Exchanging of marriage gifts (Hantaran) between representatives of the bride and groom before the solemnisation, if any.

  • A sermon (Khutbah) on marriage by the Kadi/Naib Kadi (solemnizer).

  • The bride's Wali appoints the Kadi/Naib Kadi to solemnize the marriage or otherwise agrees to solemnize the marriage himself.

  • Solemnisation (Akad Nikah).

  • Taklik, reading of special marriage conditions by the groom.

  • Prayers by the Kadi/Naib Kadi (Dua').

  • Groom giving the bride the Mahar (Maskahwin).

  • The Kadi/Naib Kadi will register your marriage if there are no changes to your solemnisation details.

    • For marriages conducted outside of ROMM, if there is a change of detail on the solemnisation day, e.g. witness, you are required to go to ROMM to make payment for the changes the next working day. Once the changes are made, ROMM will register the marriage.
