Will the MOE-OBS Challenge Programme be scheduled during the fasting month? What steps are taken to ensure students’ well-being during the fasting month?

Updated by OBS

MOE works with OBS to conduct the MOE-OBS Challenge Programme for up to 34 weeks a year, allowing more students to participate. The programme may occasionally fall during the fasting month. While it is physically demanding, additional precautions will be taken to safeguard students' well-being, consistent with how schools manage other physical activities during the fasting month, such as PE lessons and CCAs.

OBS has established guidelines specifically for students who are fasting. These include conducting pre-activity checks, daily monitoring, and a briefing by a Muslim staff member at the start of the course. Watch Instructors will reinforce key messages from this briefing at appropriate points throughout the programme.

Students will be informed upfront that the course is physically demanding and that they should expect to experience fatigue and thirst. They will not be discouraged from fasting, but will be reminded that if they feel unwell at any point, they will be asked to break their fast immediately to prevent any risk to their safety. Pre-activity briefings will also cover details on activity intensity, including expedition distances, durations, and environmental conditions.

Instructors will closely and regularly monitor students who are fasting. They will ensure that sufficient rations and water are available at all times. As part of their duty of care, instructors will direct students to break their fast if the fasting regime poses a safety concern during any activity.

All students are expected to adhere to safety rules, including staying with the group during activities. As a mark of respect for those who are fasting, instructors may allow them to sit apart from the group during daytime mealtimes.

Should any student experience discomfort during the course, they are encouraged to alert their instructor or any OBS staff. Students will be referred to the OBS Medical Centre where necessary for assessment and monitoring.
