How is active tuberculosis (TB) disease treated? How much does it cost?

Treatment for active TB disease usually involves a combination of several different drugs, taken for 6 to 9 months. More than 95% of patients are cured if they follow the treatment regimen (i.e. take all the medications in a timely manner, as prescribed by the doctors).
A small proportion of patients with active TB disease may require more intensive and longer treatment if they have bacteria that is resistant to first-line treatment. Treatment will be closely monitored by medical professionals to check on treatment progress and any side effects.
TB treatment at the Tuberculosis Control Unit (TBCU) is heavily subsidised for Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents.
