There is a hadith that says we are allowed to eat meat that is dubious (shubhah) after saying Bismillah on it. Is this true?

A hadith narrated by Bukhari relates: "Some people have brought meat to us, we do not know whether they mention the name of Allah or not. He said: You say the name of Allah (i.e., Bismillah) then eat."

While this hadith is considered sahih (authentic), it's crucial to understand its context. The meat was brought to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions; they did not actively seek it out. Nevertheless, Islam, being a religion of ease, allows for the consumption of meat of uncertain origin (syubhah) under specific circumstances:

If the method of slaughter is unknown, it is presumed to comply with Islamic law. This aligns with the Islamic legal principle 'Al-yaqeen la yazulu bi syak' (certainty is not overruled by doubt).

This hadith should not be taken as a blanket permission to eat all meat indiscriminately. It's more applicable in situations similar to those faced by the Prophet, such as when travelling.

The meat may have been slaughtered by People of the Book (Jews and Christians), whose methods are considered similar to Islamic practices.

In modern times, various methods of animal slaughter exist, including injections, shooting, and stunning, making it challenging for Muslims to determine the lawfulness of meat. Therefore, it's advisable to opt for halal-certified meat and food whenever possible.

The essence of this hadith is best applied when one is reasonably certain that the meat is slaughtered according to the methods of the People of the Book, which are similar to Islamic practices, and when no other options are available.

In all cases, Muslims are encouraged to exercise caution and seek halal-certified products when possible, while also understanding the flexibility provided by Islamic teachings in exceptional circumstances."
