What are the eligibility criteria for Shared Parental Leave (SPL)?
Shared Parental Leave (SPL) is a government-paid leave scheme that allows eligible working parents to share parental leave between them. The total SPL entitlement depends on the child's date of birth or Formal Intent to Adopt (FIA) date, and must be taken within 12 months of the child's date of birth or FIA date (inclusive).
Child born/EDD on or after 1 April 2025: 6 weeks of SPL to be shared between parents.
Child born/EDD on or after 1 April 2026: 10 weeks of SPL to be shared between parents.
For biological parents with a live birth:
1. Child's profile:
The child must be born, or have an Estimated Delivery Date (EDD), on or after 1 April 2025.
The child must be a Singapore Citizen (SC) at birth, or become one within 12 months of the date of birth (inclusive). SPL can only commence on or after the date the child obtains Singapore citizenship.
2. Marital status:
Mothers: All mothers are eligible, including widowed and single mothers.
Fathers: The father must have been lawfully married to the child's mother at some point between conception and birth, or must marry the child's mother within 12 months of the date of birth (inclusive). SPL can only commence on or after the date of marriage.
3. Employment status:
Employed parents must have served their employer continuously for at least 3 months before and on the child's date of birth. If the parent has served less than 3 months, they may still qualify if the employer agrees to grant the leave.
Self-employed parents must have been engaged in a trade, business, profession, or vocation continuously for at least 3 months before the child's date of birth, and must have lost income from ceasing active engagement during the SPL period.
For adoptive parents:
1. Adoption details:
The FIA date must be on or after 1 April 2025.
The parent must not be the biological parent of the child.
2. Child's profile:
The child must be below 12 months old on the FIA date.
The child must be a Singapore Citizen (SC). If the child is not a SC, at least one of the adoptive parents must have been a Singapore Citizen from the date the Dependent's Pass (DP) was issued.
3. Employment status:
Employed parents must have served their employer continuously for at least 3 months before and on the child's FIA date. If the parent has served less than 3 months, they may still qualify if the employer agrees to grant the leave.
Self-employed parents must have been engaged in a trade, business, profession, or vocation continuously for at least 3 months before the child's FIA date, and must have lost income from ceasing active engagement during the SPL period.
