Why must the first 8 weeks of Government-Paid Maternity Leave (GPML) be taken in a continuous block, even for non-continuous (flexible) leave type?
The broad intent of Government-Paid Maternity Leave (GPML) is to support mothers in caring for and bonding with their infants. The first 8 weeks of GPML must be taken continuously in a block to support mothers in the initial weeks after the infant's birth, when infants require intensive care and attention. Mothers can also take the time to recuperate from childbirth.
