What is my Government-Paid Childcare Leave (GPCL)/Extended Childcare Leave (ECL) benefits if I have more than one child?
If you have more than one child, your Government-Paid Childcare Leave (GPCL)/Extended Childcare Leave (ECL) benefits for each relevant period is not cumulative but is based on your children's ages*.
Have a child <7 years old? | Have a child between 7 and 12 years old? | Childcare leave benefit |
Y | Y | Up to 6 days of GPCL |
Y | N | Up to 6 days of GPCL |
N | Y | 2 days of ECL |
Example 1:
If your younger child is 4 years old while your elder child is 10 years old, you will be able to enjoy up to 6 days of childcare leave.
*Your child’s age is computed based on the age your child turns on his birthday within the relevant period that the leave is taken. Example: If your child turns 7 on his birthday within the relevant period, your child will be considered 7 years old.
If your child is born in the relevant period when you are eligible for up to 6 days of GPCL for an older child, the leave taken in that period will be deemed to be consumed in respect of your older child. This allocation allows you a longer period to consume your leave.
Example 2:
If your youngest child is born in the relevant period you are eligible for 2 days of ECL for an older child, the leave taken in that period will be deemed to be consumed either in respect of your older or youngest child depending on the number of childcare leave taken. Please refer to the table below:
The older child is born in 2010 and the youngest child is born in 2018.
No. of childcare leave taken in 2018 | Leave taken in 2018 in respect of | Childcare leave benefit for youngest child |
|---|---|---|
2 days of childcare leave | Older child | GPCL benefit of up to 6 days per relevant period in respect of youngest child will be from 2019 |
More than 2 days of childcare leave | Youngest child | GPCL benefit of up to 6 days per relevant period in respect of youngest child will be from 2018 |
Example 3:
If you have twins, the GPCL taken in the first relevant period of the twins' birth will be deemed to be consumed in respect of your older twin. Should you consume ECL in the relevant period the twins turn 7 years old (instead of GPCL), the ECL taken in that period will be deemed to be consumed in respect of your older twin. This allocation approach allows you a longer period to consume your leave. Please refer to the table below.
The twins are born in 2014, and you have no other children.
Relevant period in which GPCL/ECL was taken | No. of GPLC/ECL taken | Leave taken in respect of | Childcare leave benefit for younger twin |
|---|---|---|---|
2014 | 6 days of GPCL | Older twin | GPCL benefit of up to 6 days per relevant period in respect of younger twin will be from 2015 to 2021 |
2021 | 2 days of ECL | Older twin | ECL benefit of up to 2 days per relevant period in respect of younger twin will be from 2022 to 2027 |
