Why is the additional two weeks of Government-Paid Paternity Leave (GPPL) extended on a voluntary basis for employees?

The Government has progressively strengthened support for parents to manage their work and family commitments through enhancements to paid parental leave over the years.  These enhancements aim to strike a balance between employees’ and employers’ needs.

In consultation with Tripartite Partners, we have decided to introduce the increased GPPL on a voluntary basis. This will help to ease the transition for employers and minimise disruption to their manpower arrangements. This will also allow employers that are ready to grant more GPPL to be reimbursed by the Government and encourage others to provide the additional PL as part of their benefits.
