Will autonomous vehicles take away jobs from taxi and private hire car (PHC) drivers?

Updated by MOT

Singapore adopts a phased approach to autonomous vehicle deployment, starting with fixed route shuttles in Punggol. The risk of job displacement in the near term is low. There are currently fewer than 20 autonomous vehicles in Singapore, and fewer than 7,000 worldwide — well under 10% of Singapore's taxi and private-hire car population.

The Government understands that drivers may have concerns about how autonomous vehicles could affect their livelihoods in the longer term. The Government, unions, and employers are working together to help drivers prepare early for this transition. We will continue to engage workers to better understand their concerns.
