Autonomous shuttles are self-driving vehicles operating on public roads. They improve first-mile and last-mile connectivity for commuters, such as helping residents travel between homes, MRT stations, bus interchanges, offices, schools, parks and nearby amenities. Unlike taxis, they do not usually travel anywhere on demand. Unlike regular public buses, they are smaller and suited to local routes where full-sized buses may be less efficient. They use sensors, cameras, mapping and onboard software to detect roads, pedestrians, vehicles and obstacles. Autonomous shuttles have been rolled out in Punggol, and we are considering wider deployment in other parts of Singapore, such as Mandai, Tuas, and Sentosa.
