Why is the Merdeka Generation Package only extended to those born in the 1950s?

Updated by MOH

Compared to younger cohorts, the MG had fewer opportunities and lower wages, and they were less able to save up for their healthcare needs. The MGP provides additional support to this group, who are reaching their retirement years.

Younger cohorts of Singaporeans would have benefitted more from the schemes introduced over the years (e.g. MediSave in 1984), and are in a better position to look after their own healthcare needs. At the same time, we recognise that some will still need more help. The Government continues to provide substantial support through permanent healthcare schemes, to ensure that healthcare remains affordable for all.
