I am a registered lawyer who will be moving to a different law practice. How do I transfer my Certificate of Registration ("CoR")?
The CoR of a lawyer moving from his/her current law practice to another law practice cannot be transferred.
The other law practice will need to apply for a new CoR for the lawyer, and the lawyer's current law practice will need to submit an application to terminate his/her existing CoR.
For continuity of practice, both applications can be submitted concurrently and in advance as the law practices can enter prospective start or end dates in the application forms. Please also factor in the various processing time required when proposing the prospective start and end dates in the application forms. Your CoR registered under your current law practice will continue to be valid until the termination date.
Please note that we will only be able to issue the new CoR after we have received and processed the application to terminate the existing CoR from the lawyer's current law practice.
A Singapore solicitor, who is registered under section 36E of the Legal Profession Act, moving from a foreign law practice entity to a Singapore law practice will not need a CoR at the Singapore law practice. However, the foreign law practice entity will need to terminate his/her CoR.
