What are the streamlined BMT programmes?

Updated by MINDEF

Pre-enlistees enlisting into the SAF from Oct 2027 onwards will be assigned to one of three Basic Military Training (BMT) programmes (BMT Programme 1, 2, or 3) based on their medical exemptions, if any. Their commanders will also take into account the enlistees’ medical exemptions in their training regime and deployment.

BMT Programme 1

Recruits will go through training activities such as the IPPT, Standard Obstacle Course, route marches, and field training. Recruits will be eligible for all vocations. The typical duration of Programme 1 is 17 weeks, which includes the Physical Training Phase.

Pre-enlistees who are eligible for an eight-week reduction in full-time NS duration will be granted the eight-week reduction if they attain at least 61 points in their PE-IPPT. The duration of Programme 1 for these pre-enlistees is 9 weeks, as they will enlist into Direct Basic Training.

Pre-enlistees who are medically assessed to be obese with a BMI of more than 27.0 will undergo a longer Programme 1 of 19 weeks to build up their physical fitness progressively.

BMT Programme 2

Recruits will go through calibrated physical training and adjusted field activities. Recruits will be eligible for Combat Support, Combat Service Support, Service and some Combat vocations. The typical duration of Programme 2 is 9 weeks.

BMT Programme 3

Recruits will go through training on basic soldiering fundamentals and activities for a healthy lifestyle. Recruits will be eligible for Combat Service Support and Service vocations. The typical duration of Programme 3 is 9 weeks.
