I am a foreigner and have been granted Singapore Permanent Resident (SPR) status under the Foreign Student Scheme (FSS. Am I required to register and serve National Service (NS)?
Under the Enlistment Act 1970, all Singapore Citizens and Singapore Permanent Residents (SPR) are liable for National Service (NS). The Immigrations and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) has stated clearly in the invitation letter and Permanent Residency (PR) approval letter that males who obtain Singapore Permanent Resident (SPR) status under this scheme are required to serve NS. SPRs under the Professionals/Technical Personnel and Skilled Workers (PTS) Scheme are administratively exempted from NS.
