What are the general responsibilities of governing board members?

Governing board members must:


  • Act in the best interest of the charity and be actively involved in the management and decision-making process of the charity;

  • Stay true to the charitable purpose(s) and objects and abide by the rules set out in the charity’s governing instrument;

  • Ensure proper management of the charity by establishing good governance practices and strong internal controls for proper accountability and transparency;

  • Ensure that the charity complies with the legislative requirements, including filing the annual returns on time.
