How did the Government decide what should be covered under MediShield Life in this review?

In MediShield Life Council’s review, there were a few considerations:

First, MediShield Life was created as a national health insurance scheme to fully cover majority of the subsidised bills in public hospitals. Patients use their MediSave savings to pay the deductible and co-insurance. However, as medical bills have increased over the years, this coverage has dropped.

Second, the Government recognises that healthcare is now being provided outside of hospitals — like in outpatient, community, and home settings — areas that MediShield Life mostly doesn’t cover.

Lastly, new medical technologies have introduced life-saving treatments, like Cell, Tissue, and Gene Therapy Products (CTGTPs), which are also not covered by MediShield Life.

The recommended approach balances enhancing affordability for patients while keeping premiums manageable for everyone.
