What is an unmanned aircraft (UA)?

A UA refers to any aircraft that can be flown or used without any person on board the aircraft to operate it. They are controlled either remotely by a person on the ground or through the use of on-board computers. Some examples of UA include radio-controlled aircraft, drones and remote-controlled kites.
