What is an authentication certificate?

Updated by SINGPASS 22,697 found this helpful

When setting up the Singpass app on your device, you will be issued a digital identity by the National Certification Authority (NCA). This is used as proof of your online identity whenever you use your Singpass to transact with digital services.

Your digital identity is represented by the authentication certificate issued to you. It includes a unique serial number that can be viewed in your Singpass app settings under "Digital identity details".

These certificates are used as part of Public Key Infrastructure technology and provide a trusted means of authenticating a person's identity for electronic transactions. When you scan the QR code to log in with Singpass, the authentication certificate is verified to confirm your identity.

How can I renew the authentication certificate?

The authentication certificate in the Singpass app is valid for one year. You will be prompted to renew it starting 90 days before the expiry date. When the prompt appears, you can renew the certificate directly within the app by checking the details and ticking the three checkboxes. Once renewed, you can continue using the Singpass app to transact with digital services.

What happens if I forgot to renew and the authentication certificate has expired?

Once the authentication certificate has expired, your app will be automatically reset, and you will need to set up the Singpass app again.

The authentication certificate is different from your signing certificate, which will be used when you sign documents or authorise transactions with Singpass.
