What will recovery after transplant be like? / How long will I need to stay in the hospital? / Will I still need dialysis after transplant?

Updated by SGH-TRANSPLANTPEDIA

You can expect to stay in the hospital for about 2 to 3 weeks (14-21 days), depending on how your recovery goes.
For deceased donor transplants:
- The new kidney may take some time to start working
- You may need to continue dialysis for a short period
Dialysis will be stopped once the transplanted kidney is working well, usually before you go home.
Every patient’s journey is different. Your transplant team will be with you every day, guiding and supporting you through each step of your recovery.
