How are kidneys matched to patients?

Updated by SGH-TRANSPLANTPEDIA

When a donor kidney becomes available, the national allocation system decides which patients are shortlisted to be called in.

This system uses a careful and detailed calculation that looks at:
- Your blood group
- How well the kidney matches your body
- How long you have been on dialysis
The goal is to give the kidney to the most suitable patient in a fair and safe way.
