Updated by SGH-AHPEDIA There are variable factors in determining if you can walk someone can walk again after spinal cord injury which makes the prediction of walking challenging. Some of the factors to consider include the level of injury, severity of injury and whether the injury is “complete” or “incomplete”. Patients with “incomplete” SCI have greater potential than “complete”.
Some people can regain walking in a few months, some a few years, while others may not be able to walk for long distance or will require walking aid, orthosis or someone to assist. Some may only be able to walk using rehabilitation equipment during therapy sessions and the use of wheelchair remains as their main mode of moving around.
Treatment options for walking includes standing, stepping and walking with or without aid. The physiotherapist may also suggest the use of body weight supported device for overground walking or on treadmill, as well as the use of robotics for walking practice.
