How soon after surgery or radiation therapy might I experience swallowing problems?

Swallowing difficulties can appear at different times depending on your treatment. After surgery, problems may be immediate due to swelling, pain, or structural changes. With radiation therapy, dysphagia often develops gradually during treatment and may worsen in the weeks following completion as tissues continue to heal. Some patients notice improvements within weeks to months, whilst others may experience longer-lasting effects. Your medical team will monitor your progress closely.
