What is a tracheostomy and why do I need one before/during/after head and neck surgery?

A tracheostomy is a surgical procedure that creates an opening in the front of your neck, through which a breathing tube is inserted directly into your airway. This allows you to breathe through the tube instead of through your nose and mouth. It may be needed if your normal airway is blocked by swelling from surgery, if breathing becomes difficult during recovery, or to protect your airway during treatment.
