How do I know if my preterm baby is trying to communicate with me?

Yes, your preterm baby does communicate! Look for these signs.Calm/happy signals: Relaxed facial expressions, looking at you or around, hands fisted and brought to chest, limbs that aren't floppy. Stressed signals: Frowning, crying, closing eyes and falling asleep suddenly, fingers splayed with hands stretched out, muscle shaking in jaw or hands, yawning, hiccupping, sneezing. Understanding and responding to these signals helps your baby learn that their behaviour has meaning and builds trust. Feel free to approach your paediatric feeding and communication speech therapists to find out more!
