Do mammograms hurt?
Most women find mammograms uncomfortable rather than truly painful. Here's what to expect:
The compression: Your breast needs to be compressed between two plates to spread the tissue and get clear images. This pressure can be uncomfortable but only lasts a few seconds for each image.
Individual variation: Some women experience minimal discomfort, whilst others find it more uncomfortable. This often depends on breast sensitivity and size.
Tips for comfort:
Schedule your mammogram for the week after your period when breasts are least tender
Avoid caffeine on the day of your exam
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever beforehand if you're concerned
Wear a two-piece outfit for easier changing
Remember: The discomfort is brief - the entire exam usually takes about 20 minutes, with only a few seconds of compression for each image.
